Creative Process / Proceso Creativo
The process began with the creation of a series of thumbnail sketches to define the composition. The book jacket needed to accommodate a long title, along with approximately 20 authors, so the initial drafts served as a reference to explore the layout. Three distinct approaches were considered. Firstly, a landscape concept (from desert to suburb) examining various transitions. Secondly, the depiction of the body as an integral part of the landscape. Thirdly, a collage combining elements of nature and culture, employing a uniform palette to allow text to be placed on top with sufficient contrast.
/ El proceso comenzó con la creación de bocetos miniatura para definir la composición. La portada del libro debía incluir un título largo, además de aproximadamente 20 autores, por lo que los primeros borradores sirvieron como referencia para explorar el diseño. Se consideraron tres enfoques distintos. En primer lugar, la idea de paisaje (desierto a suburbio) en diversas transiciones. En segundo lugar, la representación del cuerpo como parte integral del paisaje. Y en tercer lugar, un collage que combinaba elementos naturales y culturales, utilizando una paleta uniforme para permitir que los textos se destacaran en contraste.
The art director, Kristie Radwilowicz, chose the collage approach, which prompted to produce more refined and detailed sketches. Ultimately, this particular version was selected, incorporating various elements referenced in the short stories and poems featured in the anthology.

At this stage, we experimented with different typefaces, ranging from handwritten styles to block fonts. Kristie Radwilowicz created the final layout, placing the authors’ names around the edges and incorporating the long title at the centre.

Once the layout was finalised, I developed a range of colour palettes—digitally, but also using gouache, the medium I intended to use in the final illustration.

The final piece was created on paper using gouache, with touches of coloured pencil. The painting was slightly brighter in tone, so after scanning, I reduced the contrast and darkened it slightly.
